Behaviour Counselling
Behaviour treatment courses are designed for dogs displaying significant problems including:-
| Aggression | Repetitive/stereotypic behaviours |
| Separation problems | Inappropriate toileting |
| Nervousness, fears and phobias | Excessive barking |
| Excessive management problems | Chase problems |
As a number of behaviour problems can be related to medical factors, all behaviour treatment courses require a referral from your veterinary surgeon. It is advisable that you contact your veterinary surgery prior to booking an appointment to ensure that a behaviour referral is considered appropriate.
Behaviour treatment courses are divided into 3 sessions. The first session lasts approx. 1½ hours. During this time a history of your dog’s behaviour is taken and the details of the problems being displayed are discussed in detail. Initial recommendations for your treatment programme will then be provided. A second session (1 hour) is arranged for approximately two weeks later, during which further work will be implemented and practical exercises will be introduced. The final session is conducted 2-4 weeks later (1 hour). At this point progress will be assessed and recommendations for future work will be made. Throughout the treatment course you will receive detailed written reports and full telephone support as you work through the treatment programme.
Alongside the primary behaviour problem, any minor behaviour or training issues can also be addressed during the treatment course. Behaviour treatment courses are conducted either on site at Glenbrittle Kennels, or in your own home. Where the problem is directly related to the home environment (such as separation anxiety or territorial behaviour) it is recommend that you request a house call.
Behaviour tip of the Month
With all behaviours, good and bad, the more they are practiced the stronger they become. Preventing your dog from rehearsing unwanted behaviours by avoiding problem situations is often the starting point for a behaviour modification programme.
